It’s time to start having guilty pleasure bands that you were actually proud to listen to. None of this Demi Lovato crap and ironically liking her. Seriously, when did people stop listening to artists with talent?
Not sure what my breaking point was. Maybe it was seeing the Muscle Shoals documentary last fall and remembering what actual music is supposed to sound like. Maybe it was driving between Augusta and Atlanta last weekend with a friend and finding airwaves full of music that sounded like T-Pain was behind it.
Growing up, we’d listen to 60s and 70s in the car sometimes. My mom would quiz us and if we got the song title or the artist correct, we’d get a quarter and she’d cleverly get to listen to what she’d want. Sure, we’d also listen to Z104 and BSB, *NSYNC, and the like, but my sisters and I grew up with a solid foundation of GOOD music: Al Green, The Beatles, Chaka Khan, Elton John. I really shudder to think of what the “oldies” stations will play when my generation ages.
Anyway, my point is I think it’s time we start again listening to music that sounds like it was meant to be played on vinyl and not on the floor of a sweaty nightclub. Enter Lake Street Dive, a band that’s been showered with praise from everyone from Katie Couric to Questlove. I’ve been waiting since June for their new album that drops in two weeks. The vocalist, Rachael Price, has pipes on her and is crazy talented. Just listen and see what I’m talking about.
